US tariffs on imports

On 12 March the US imposed a 25-percent import tariff on steel and aluminium and products derived from them. The first Trump administration also imposed import tariffs on steel and aluminium in 2018. These were subsequently removed by the Biden administration. The tariffs imposed by the first Trump administration have now been reinstated. The 2018 tariffs consisted of a 25-percent tariff on steel and a 10-percent tariff on aluminium. Now, aluminium is also subject to a 25-percent tariff. In addition, the number of products subject to import tariffs has been increased. In 2018, tariffs were limited to raw steel and aluminium and some basic products such as metal profiles, bars and wire. Now the tariffs also apply to derivative products. These are products that contain steel and aluminium, such as machine components, automotive parts and aircraft parts. As a result, many more products are now subject to US import tariffs.
