Nationality or origin

Being a legal national of a certain state (citizenship).

A person can have multiple nationalities. In order to avoid double counting, in statistical overviews only one nationality is assigned to persons with more than one nationality. To this end, priority rules are set.

This means that people of Dutch nationality are always considered as Dutch citizens in the statistics. For people who are of non-Dutch origin, the order is: nationality of one of the Benelux countries, nationality of a state within the European Union, other European nationality, non-European nationality.

Persons who have no nationality are stateless.
