After a sentence has been handed down, everyone has the right to appeal for a fortnight after the verdict. During this period, people have not yet officially been sentenced to a custodial sentence and are still under pre-trial detention. In addition, those who actually appeal are still not sentenced and are therefore also still under pre-trial detention. However, they are transferred from a House of Detention to a prison.
