Within the EU, companies must have sufficient rights to emit greenhouse gases such as CO2. Customers and suppliers of these emission rights buy and sell these rights on the market (emissions trading). This leads to a market price for greenhouse gas emissions. Because the total number of rights goes down every year, total greenhouse gas emissions are being reduced as inexpensively as possible this way.
