Carbon pricing (emissions)

Within the EU, the relevant rights are required in order to emit greenhouse gases such as CO2. These emissions rights are bought and sold on the market; this is known as emissions trading. This results in a market price for greenhouse gas emissions.

The total number of rights available is reduced every year, ensuring that total greenhouse gas emissions are also reduced in the least expensive manner possible.
