Last year, nearly half of all employees in the Netherlands were at least one time absent from work because they were ill. Statistics Netherlands announced today that in nearly one quarter of cases, the cause was partly or predominantly work-related.

Last year, 458 thousand workers sustained physical or mental damage due to accidents in the workplace, i.e. 1 in 15 employees in the Netherlands. Nearly half of victims were absent from work at least one day as a result of such accidents. Most work-related accidents occurred in the sector hotels and restaurants and the construction sector.

The sickness absence rate among employees in the Netherlands was reduced to 3.9 percent in 2013, i.e. at any one time 39 in every one thousand employees were absent due to sickness. The rate reached the lowest level since the current sickness absence survey was started up in 1996.
