Over 8 in 10 school students plan to leave the Caribbean Netherlands

Over 80 percent of school students in the Caribbean Netherlands want to live somewhere else after they finish secondary education. Exploring the world, studying abroad or working elsewhere are the reasons that were mentioned the most often. Around a quarter of school students do not enjoy life on the islands. On Bonaire in particular, the number of young people has been falling since 2011 - and this trend is likely to continue over the next decade. This is according to a survey conducted by Statistics Netherlands (CBS), which resulted in the 2025 edition of The Caribbean Netherlands in Numbers.

Using themes such as youth care, growing up in unequal circumstances, education, employment, substance use, crime and well-being, the 2022 Annual Report of the National Youth Monitor describes how youth in the Netherlands fared in 2021. The previous edition of the Annual Report showed changes in the living situation of young people in 2020, the first year of the coronavirus pandemic.
Young people relatively often choose secondary vocational education

After secondary education, young people up to the age of 25 are more likely to attend secondary vocational education (MBO) than higher vocational education (HBO) or university (WO). During the 2021/’22 academic year, 40 percent of young people under 25 participating in further education were enrolled in MBO. For HBO and WO, this was 35 and 25 percent, respectively. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this in its National Youth Monitor.

40 percent international first-year students at Dutch universities

More and more foreign students enrol at a Dutch university (WO) or university of applied science (HBO). This upward trend continued even during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the 2021/’22 academic year, 115 thousand students came from abroad. Over 42 thousand of them studied in the Netherlands for the first time, which is equivalent to one in four first-year students. At universities, the proportion of first-year students from abroad is as high as 40 percent. This is evident from new figures released by Statistics Netherlands (CBS).
