Biological pest control used in 94 percent of greenhouse cultivation

Biological pest control was used in 94 percent of greenhouse crop cultivation in 2024 (by cultivated area). That was around the same as in 2020. However, the use of certain types of biological control agents has increased. For example, the use of predatory mites and predatory thrips increased from 69 percent of the total cultivated area in 2020 to 84 percent in 2024. In addition, microbiological agents such as bacteria are used to control pests in over two-thirds of greenhouse crop cultivation by area. This is according to provisional figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

More excess nitrogen due to poor harvest, but less nitrogen in manure

Excess nitrogen from agriculture rose by nearly 13 percent in 2024, to reach a total of 295 million kilograms. This was mainly due to a smaller harvest of wheat and other crops, which meant that less nitrogen was taken up by crops. However, 3 percent less nitrogen was excreted in livestock manure. The nitrogen surplus is less than half what it was in 1990. This is according to the most recent figures on the nutrient balance in agriculture from Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

The Netherlands exported agricultural goods with a total value of 137.5 billion euros in 2025. That was an increase of 8.4 percent relative to 2024. One of the factors contributing to this increase was a sharp rise in the export value of cocoa products. This is reported by Wageningen Economic Research (WUR) and Statistics Netherlands (CBS), on the basis of joint research commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LVVN).

In 2025, there were 592 thousand goats kept on goat farms in the Netherlands. That is almost five times as many as in 2000, when there were 126 thousand goats. The number has remained roughly the same over the past five years. The largest number of goats are kept in the eastern and central parts of the country, mainly for milk production. Usage per hectare was 5.6 kilograms, down from 7.1 kilograms in 2020. Fewer pesticides were used to control fungi, weeds and insects, and the use of pesticides in the cultivation of lilies more than halved in that period.
More than 86 million kilograms of strawberries were harvested in 2024, twice as much as in 2010. This is primarily because more strawberries are grown in greenhouses and polytunnels. The total area used to cultivate strawberries decreased by more than 15 percent to 1.4 thousand hectares during the same period. The area used to cultivate small fruit, such as berries, declined after reaching a peak in 2018. This is according to figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

The total value of ecosystem services in 2022 was over 15 billion euros, 50 percent more than it was in 2013. Ecosystem services are provided by nature, such as the production of timber and food, cooling in urban areas or a green environment in which to relax. The value of cultural ecosystem services such as tourism and recreation has seen a particular increase. The benefits of ecosystem services far exceed the amounts we spend on managing natural areas. These are the main findings of the Natural Capital Accounts, which Statistics Netherlands (CBS) has developed in partnership with Wageningen University & Research (WUR).

Area used to grow greenhouse vegetables has increased in ten years

The area used to grow the four primary greenhouse vegetables: tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and aubergines, was a total of 4.1 thousand hectares in 2023. That was 10 percent more than ten years previously. Most of the extra space was used to grow peppers and aubergines. After a peak in 2021, recent years have seen a decline in the area used for these four vegetables. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this in its latest edition of The Netherlands in Numbers.

The total quantity of nitrogen excreted in animal manure in 2023 was 464 million kg. That was 26 million kg below the nitrogen emission ceiling for that year. The total quantity of phosphate excreted was 147 million kg, which was 3 million kg below the relevant ceiling for 2023. However, the volumes produced in 2023 still exceed the new ceilings that will take effect in 2025.
The number of sheep in the Netherlands fell by 61 thousand (-8.4 percent) in 2023 compared to the previous year.
In 2022, the agricultural nitrogen surplus, i.e., that part of excess nitrogen which is not fixed in animal and plant products, increased by 6.5 percent year on year to a total of 312 million kilograms. This was due to the low grass yield during the summer drought that year, which meant less nitrogen was fixed in grass. 84 million kg nitrogen was emitted into the air, while 228 million kg was not taken up by the soil. The nitrogen surplus had not been this high since 2018. This is evident from the national nutrient balance calculated by Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

As of 2023, the agricultural area devoted to arable crop farming has increased by 14.4 thousand to a total of 549 thousand hectares. The wheat acreage has increased most strongly, but seed onions and legumes as well are being cultivated more than in 2022. Potatoes, sugar beets and silage maize are being cultivated less this year. Despite the increase in 2023, the total area devoted to arable crops has decreased by over 13 percent relative to 2000. This is based on provisional results from the 2023 Agricultural Census, conducted by Statistics Netherlands (CBS).
