Among industrial exporters in the Netherlands, 95 percent are concerned regarding international trade policy in the next 12 months. These companies are chiefly worried about the effects of import tariffs and non-tariff measures on their exports, such as customs enforcement or product specification requirements.
The import value of Ukrainian goods was 2.3 billion euros in 2024, which means imports from that country have returned to the level last seen in 2021, before the war in Ukraine began. Maize remains the most important product imported into the Netherlands from Ukraine. Imports of steel and iron from Ukraine have not recovered since the Russian invasion.
In this edition of the Internationalisation Monitor, we take an in-depth look at the trade relationship between the Netherlands and the US. What does the American economy look like, and how are the US and the Netherlands performing in terms of trade, investment, innovation, digitalisation and sustainability? What kinds and volumes of goods and services do we trade, and how important are we to one another in these areas? We also explore the extent to which the Netherlands and the US are intertwined in global value chains, and what characterises American multinationals operating in the Netherlands.

The international trade in goods stalled in 2023 and the first half of 2024, but over the past 30 years it has grown significantly with the exception of sharp falls during the credit crisis and the coronavirus pandemic. In 2023, the Netherlands imported and exported more than three times as much in goods as it did in 1995. The economy grew by almost three-quarters over the same period. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this based on research on international trade that dates back to 1917.

Goods exports from the Netherlands to Russia fell sharply following the tightening of sanctions by the European Union in 2022. At the same time, however, exports of sanctioned goods to seven countries with an elevated risk of sanctions circumvention increased. A remarkable number of smaller, newer firms, which were not involved in exporting these sanctioned products prior to 2022, have since begun exporting to these countries. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this on the basis of new research carried out in partnership with the University of Groningen.
