Well-being among women is less high than it is among men, on average. The biggest differences are in the areas of paid work and perceived health. Women are also slightly less likely to be satisfied with the work that they do, less likely to trust other people and government institutions, and more likely to experience the adverse effects of environmental pollution. Additionally, people aged under 35 have lower well-being than those in the higher age groups. These are two of the findings presented by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) in its Monitor of Well-being and the Sustainable Development Goals 2025.

Share of income spent on housing fell between 2018 and 2023

The median housing cost ratio – i.e. total housing costs as a percentage of household income – was lower in 2023 than in 2018 for both home owners and tenants. The sharpest decline was seen among households living in social housing, from 31.0 percent in 2018 to 25.4 percent in 2023. However, the median housing cost ratio was also lower in 2023 than in 2018 for households living in owner-occupied dwellings and for households renting from a non-housing association. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this based on newly released figures from the Woonbase, a housing database produced by CBS.
