The volume of goods imported was up by 4.7 percent on July 2024. This was mainly because imports of chemical products, crude oil and natural gas and electrical equipment were up.

According to a provisional estimate, around 510 thousand households were affected by energy poverty in 2024. That was 6.1 percent of all households in the Netherlands, and nearly 180 thousand more than in 2023. The main reason for this increase was that the government’s financial support measures were no longer in place. This is according to new figures from Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) and Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

The Netherlands invested nearly 41 billion euros in climate change mitigation in 2023. That was almost double the 23 billion euros invested in 2019.
Electricity consumption for the purpose of domestic transport increased to 17 petajoules (PJ) in 2024. That was almost double the level consumed in 2019. This was partly due to increasing consumption of electricity by electric cars. Meanwhile, electricity consumed by the information and communication sector was up by around a half. This was mainly due to electricity consumed by new data centres. Homes consumed nearly one-fifth of all electricity in the Netherlands in 2024. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this on the basis of provisional figures.

Netherlands now more dependent on US for energy, less on Russia

Between 2015 and 2024, the Netherlands became more dependent on oil and natural gas from the United States in order to meet its energy needs. The Netherlands met 24 percent of its total energy needs through imports from the US in 2024. This increase has been offset by reduced dependence on Russia in recent years, which supplied less than 3 percent of the Netherlands’ energy needs in 2024. The Netherlands was 78 percent dependent on energy from other countries in the same year. The European Union as a whole has also become more dependent on the US and less dependent on Russia for its energy. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this on the basis of new figures.
