Health care costs for women higher than for men

Health care costs were around 13 percent higher for women than men in 2023 (based on the basic health care insurance package in the Netherlands). This is mainly because women have higher costs between the ages of 15 and 55 years of age. Among men over 60, health care costs are actually higher than for women of the same age, mainly due to higher costs for hospital care. This is according to analysis by Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

This picture has not changed over the past fifteen years. The number of women killed by other perpetrators has fallen. Murder or manslaughter by a partner or ex-partner are most common among divorced women. The figure for the Netherlands is in the middle range compared to other European countries.
In 2024, young adults in the Netherlands were more likely to have negative views on crime, the size of the population and the mentality of people than they had in 2018. Students attending university or HBO (higher professional education) were the most likely to indicate that environmental pollution is a major problem, while young people in secondary education or MBO (secondary vocational education) were most likely to indicate that crime is a problem. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this on the basis of the 2025 annual report of the National Youth Monitor.

Lesbian, gay and bi-plus adults experienced worse mental health than heterosexual adults in 2023 and 2024. They were more likely to have symptoms of anxiety or depression and sleep problems, and they also had more frequent contact with providers of mental health care. ‘Bi-plus’ individuals are particularly vulnerable.
Well-being among women is less high than it is among men, on average. The biggest differences are in the areas of paid work and perceived health. Women are also slightly less likely to be satisfied with the work that they do, less likely to trust other people and government institutions, and more likely to experience the adverse effects of environmental pollution. Additionally, people aged under 35 have lower well-being than those in the higher age groups. These are two of the findings presented by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) in its Monitor of Well-being and the Sustainable Development Goals 2025.

High quality of life today still comes at the expense of future generations

The Netherlands is a country where people are generally satisfied, trust one another and enjoy a high and increasing level of material well-being. But there are issues too. For instance, there are plenty of jobs, but work pays less well than it used to, in relative terms. The housing shortage also continues to grow. And, once again this year, the high level of well-being that we enjoy today comes at the expense of future generations. The earning power of the economy is declining, the pressure on the natural environment remains high, and the viability of the welfare state and the quality of public institutions are also under pressure. This is according to the Monitor of Well-being and the SDGs 2025, which Statistics Netherlands (CBS) presented to the Dutch House of Representatives on 21 May. The English version of the Monitor of Well-being will be published in July.

Healthcare workers on fewer hours are the most likely to work more

Statistics Netherlands (CBS) tracked changes in the number of working hours of workers in the healthcare and well-being sector between Q4 2021 and Q4 2023. Those working fewer hours (less than 24 hours per week) were more likely to increase their working hours during that period. Conversely, workers who were working more hours (more than 28 hours) were more likely to reduce the number of hours they worked. Overall, then, workers in the healthcare and well-being sector were most likely to modify their working hours towards 24-28 hours per week. This pattern was evident among all age groups according to new figures produced for the Labour Market in Healthcare and Well-being (AZW) research programme.

They were the least likely to choose unhealthy snacks and drinks containing sugar and the most likely to be choosing healthy foods. People aged between 12 and 18 were the least likely to eat healthily.
The number of people that reported having an allergy rose from 18 percent in 2014 to 21 percent in 2023. Allergies were most likely to occur in people aged between 25 and 34 years old. Adult women were more likely to have allergies than adult men, but among youngsters, this was the other way around. People living in urban areas were more likely to report allergies than those living in rural areas. These results are based on the latest National Health Survey by Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

In 2023, the distance to the nearest hospital or outpatient clinic by road for people in the Netherlands was 4.8 kilometres on average. That was 400 metres less than in 2008. However, the distance to other types of healthcare facilities increased. The distance to the nearest hospital or outpatient clinic varies greatly by municipality. Residents of the Randstad conurbation have the most hospitals or outpatient clinics nearby.
On 1 January 2024, 10.6 million people aged 18 years or older had registered their preference regarding organ donation in the national Donor Register. This number was 6.9 million in 2020, the year when the new Donor Act took effect. A total of 4.8 million people have given their consent for organ donation, 1 million more than in 2020. A total of 4.3 million people have not given their consent, which is an increase of 2 million relative to 2020. Adults of non-Dutch origin were almost twice as likely as those of Dutch origin to say they did not want to be a donor. This is clear from new figures released by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and the Donor Register.

A total of 80 percent of Dutch people aged 18 and older were satisfied with their social lives in 2023. That was a little higher than in 2020. At the same time there was a drop in the proportion of people satisfied with the amount of leisure time they have, following an increase during the pandemic years. This is clear from the latest figures released by Statistics Netherlands (CBS). The findings are based on the Social Cohesion and Well-Being survey, which is conducted every year and involves over 7 thousand people.

Today’s well-being increasingly comes at the expense of future generations

The Netherlands remains a prosperous country and a relatively cohesive society. However, for years our well-being in the ‘here and now’ has come at the expense of opportunities for future generations (‘later’) and the chances that people living elsewhere in the world have of achieving similar levels of well-being (‘elsewhere’). Natural capital, in particular, is on the decline in terms of both quantity and quality. In spite of the gradual greening of the Dutch economy, the challenges around nature and climate remain urgent. In addition, many systems required for the success of future well-being are faltering. The way in which well-being is distributed also means that the youngest age groups have the least favourable outcomes. If current trends continue, the next generation will achieve lower levels of well-being. These are among the findings of the Monitor of Well-being and the SDGs 2024 presented by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) to the Dutch House of Representatives on 15 May (Accountability Day). The English version of the report will be published in July.

In 2023, 88 percent of young adults aged 18 to 24 rated their health as good or very good. That was 91 percent in 2020. In recent years, they were less likely to rate their own health as very good and were more likely to say that it was ‘fine’. More young people have been suffering from mental health issues since 2021.
