The population of the Netherlands grew by 87 thousand in 2025, to reach 18.13 million. As in the previous three years, this growth was entirely due to net migration. Population growth slowed in 2025 and was down by 14 thousand compared with 2024. The number of people coming to live in the Netherlands slightly exceeded the number of people leaving the country to live elsewhere. This is according to provisional figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

Population forecast: more elderly than young people

The number of elderly people in the Netherlands continues to grow. People aged 65 and over now outnumber young people aged under 20 for the first time. One of the reasons for this is that people are living longer, but migration is also a factor, which means that this growth will continue over the decades to come. By 2070, the Netherlands is expected to have 2.5 million more inhabitants than it has now. This is according to the 2024-2070 Core Forecast of Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

Over 80 percent of school students in the Caribbean Netherlands want to live somewhere else after they finish secondary education. Exploring the world, studying abroad or working elsewhere are the reasons that were mentioned the most often. Around a quarter of school students do not enjoy life on the islands. On Bonaire in particular, the number of young people has been falling since 2011 - and this trend is likely to continue over the next decade. This is according to a survey conducted by Statistics Netherlands (CBS), which resulted in the 2025 edition of The Caribbean Netherlands in Numbers.

Migrants who arrived in last 10 years are staying for longer

More than half of non-Dutch migrants leave within five years of arriving in the Netherlands. However, since 2012, each year has seen a progressively smaller share of migrants leaving the Netherlands within five years. Asylum migrants, in particular, now stay in the Netherlands for longer than they used to. Labour and study migrants are more likely to leave, but in recent years the likelihood of departure has declined among that group, too, especially among knowledge migrants from outside the EU. This is according to new figures released by Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

A total of 316 thousand migrants from other countries arrived in the Netherlands in 2024. That was 19 thousand fewer than in 2023. Immigration from both other EU member states and other countries was lower than in 2023, while the number of migrants of Dutch nationality remained the same. The number of highly skilled migrants arriving in the Netherlands from countries outside the EU fell in particular. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this based on the latest figures.

In 2021, they were more likely to be living with one or both parents and less likely to be living with a partner than they were in 2011.
High quality of life today still comes at the expense of future generations

The Netherlands is a country where people are generally satisfied, trust one another and enjoy a high and increasing level of material well-being. But there are issues too. For instance, there are plenty of jobs, but work pays less well than it used to, in relative terms. The housing shortage also continues to grow. And, once again this year, the high level of well-being that we enjoy today comes at the expense of future generations. The earning power of the economy is declining, the pressure on the natural environment remains high, and the viability of the welfare state and the quality of public institutions are also under pressure. This is according to the Monitor of Well-being and the SDGs 2025, which Statistics Netherlands (CBS) presented to the Dutch House of Representatives on 21 May. The English version of the Monitor of Well-being will be published in July.

On 1 January 2025, the population of the Caribbean Netherlands stood at nearly 32 thousand. That was an increase of 1,583 (5 percent) over the previous year. The increase was largely due to population growth on Bonaire, mainly as a result of migration. On St Eustatius and Saba, the population also grew due to migration. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this on the basis of new figures.

However, in 2023, employment was the main source of income for 47 percent of them. Asylum seekers who received a residence permit in recent years were more likely to have a job than those who obtained a permit a longer time ago.
The aim of the present paper is to show how cell phone data can be used safely to compute information about dynamic population densities, that is densities that change over time because people move. These densities are to be contrasted with densities on the basis of the places of residence of persons, which are more static and also more exclusive, as they do exclude persons who do not live at a particular spot, but who just happen to be there as visitors and temporarily, to shop, for work, to attend school, or just passing through to another destination, etc.
