Retail turnover down

In June 2013, turnover generated by the Dutch retail sector was 3.7 percent down from June 2012. Prices of retail commodities were 2.7 percent up from one year previously. The volume of retail sales fell by 6.2 percent. The shopping-day pattern was less favourable in June 2013 than in June 2012. The negative effect on turnover is estimated at more than 3 percent.

Turnover generated by food, drink and tobacco shops was 1.5 percent below the level of the same month last year. Prices of food, drink and tobacco products were 3.8 percent higher. Turnover volume shrank by 5.0 percent.

The non-food sector faced a 5.7 percent turnover loss. Prices of non-food products rose by an average of 1.9 percent. Turnover volume in the non-food sector was 7.5 percent down. Consumer electronics shops and home furnishing shops suffered most. Clothes shops realised the same turnover as in June 2012. Textile supermarkets were the only branch to realise a higher turnover relative to twelve months ago.

Unlike traditional shops, mail-order firms and online shops saw turnover rise substantially (9.0percent). In the preceding months, they had also achieved good results in comparison to the same month in 2012.
