Who live where in The Hague?
Nearly half of Hague residents were born there. One quarter were born elsewhere in the Netherlands and one quarter were born abroad.
Native residents of The Hague mainly live in Scheveningen and Duindorp
The largest proportion of residents born in The Hague live in Scheveningen and Duindorp. The social and cultural fabric of the former fishing village of Scheveningen prevents many residents from moving elsewhere. In Duindorp eight in every ten residents were born within the municipality of The Hague, the rate for Scheveningen is six in ten. The majority of residents living in the districts in the south-western part of the city, were also born in The Hague. This is certainly true for the village of Loosduinen, a separate municipality until 1923, where most people worked in the glasshouse horticulture sector.

New residential areas popular among people from elsewhere
Districts where the majority of residents were born outside The Hague are situated in the VINEX locations Ypenburg and Leidschenveen. In these two districts, 38 percent of residents were born in The Hague. In the northern part of The Hague, there are various fashionable districts, like Duttendel and Benoordenhout, where the proportion of native Dutch people born outside The Hague is also relatively high.

Residents born abroad mainly live in the centre of The Hague
Residents born abroad have mostly settled in the city centre. Around the city centre - in districts like the Schildersbuurt and the Transvaalkwartier – more than half of residents were born abroad, usually in a non-western country. A large population with a non-western background is also found in the post-war districts in the south of The Hague, e.g. Moerwijk, where one in three residents have a foreign background. Residents with a western background are mainly found in the north of the city, where one quarter of residents are of foreign descent.
