Standardisation

Conversion of mortality figures from one year into another (standard) year based on age or gender. In this new release, the age composition of the population in 2014 is used as the standard, and the figures are broken down by gender. Mortality figures for dementia from the years 1996-2013 have been converted year by year, so that each year in the series contains the (virtual) figure as though that year would have had the same age composition as in 2014. This means that the increase in dementia-related deaths can no longer be attributed to a change in age composition of the population over time (ageing), as it shows the influence of risk factors, medical care or registration method.
