Reasons for job termination

Since 2013, a question was added to the Labour Force Survey (EBB) in order to find out why people have stopped working. Jobless persons still belonging to the employed labour force three months ago are asked what the main reason is for the fact that they are no longer working for their former employer. Respondent can choose one of the following response categories:

  • Job axed/cutbacks
  • Temporary contract
  • Labour conflict
  • Care duties for family/household
  • Training or study
  • (Early) retirement/high age
  • Illness/disability
  • None of these

In the response category ‘job axed/cutbacks’ there may be various reasons for the fact that a job no longer exists, e.g. cutbacks, reorganisations or bankruptcies.
