Because the age distribution in the population changes over time, standardised totals for age and gender are given in addition to gross total figures. Standardisation implies that differences in the age distribution in the population over time are taken into account. In this article, direct standardisation is applied. The standard is the age distribution in the average male and female populations in 2012.
