A binding study advice (BSA) is applicable in bachelor programmes. If a student fails to pass a set number of study points, he or she may not enrol in this discipline in the following study years. The underlying idea is that drop-out rates in later years will be reduced, and thus graduation rates will increase. Leiden University was the first to introduce the BSA, in 1996. Other universities followed in later years, introducing the BSA or tightening the requirements.
