Standardisation takes into account differences in the composition of the population regarding age and gender in the various ethnic groups. As few people with a non-western background in the Netherlands are aged 65 and older, only a standardised total is presented for under-65s. The method of direct standardisation with the age and gender composition of the entire population in the reference year is used as the standard.
