Transsexual

A transsexual is a person who has the desire to be a member of the opposite sex or has already undergone gender reassignment surgery. This survey only includes those transsexuals who have undergone gender reassignment surgery and have officially registered their gender change in court during the period 1995-2009.

Statistics Netherlands, commissioned by the Ministry of OCW (Education, Culture and Science) has compared this particular category of transsexuals to the overall 15 to 65-year-old population. The Ministry of OCW aims to improve the social acceptance of transsexuals. There are indications of social inequality in relation to transgenders; e.g. unemployment among transgenders is allegedly above the Dutch nationwide average. Therefore, the Ministry of OCW required additional information on transgenders and their position in society.
