Surcharge on motor vehicle tax

This is an additional amount which goes directly to the provincial authority. The surcharge is a fixed percentage of the main amount of motor vehicle tax levied by central government. The main tax is based on the weight of the vehicle (the heavier the vehicle, the higher the amount) and the type of fuel it runs on (petrol, diesel, LPG).
Motor vehicle tax is imposed on all residents and companies registered in the province who own a car or motorcycles (vans, lorries and buses are not included), and holders of registration numbers (e.g. registered car dealers) in the province. Ambulances, hearses, cars older than 25 years, military and police vehicles, and taxis are exempt from motor vehicle tax, and thus also from the surcharge.
