Marital status

Data on marital status (married or registered partnership, unmarried, divorced, widowed) and changes in a person’s marital status are found in the Social Statistical Database (Arts and Hoogteijling, 2002). In this article, the following changes in marital status are distinguished:
- from unmarried, widowed or divorced to married/partnership
- from married/partnership to divorced
- from married/partnership to widowed
Changes in non-registered types of cohabitation, e.g. unmarried couples living together, may affect how people rate their lives and well-being (Soons and Liefbroer, 2008). This survey focuses on personal well-being broken down by marital status.
