In this article, a distinction is made between the four major Dutch cities Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht and the nine university towns, i.e. Groningen, Enschede, Nijmegen, Maastricht, Eindhoven, Tilburg, Leiden, Delft and Wageningen. A university town is defined any town with a university, excluding the four major cities.
