No real improvement consumer confidence

The mood among consumers has hardly changed in March. The consumer confidence indicator stands at -12, as against -13 in February. The indicator reached an extremely low level (-34) in March 2009. Since then, it has grown steadily, but the upward trend levelled off in the past two months.

Consumer confidence improved somewhat in March, because Dutch consumers were far less negative about the economic climate in the past twelve months than they were in February. This component indicator increased by 5 points to reach -47. With +7, consumers’ opinions on the economic climate in the next twelve months were as positive as in February.

Consumers’ opinions on their own financial situation were the same as in February. Opinions on whether it is a good time to purchase expensive items also remained unaltered. As a result, the willingness-to-buy indicator remained stable in March.
