Prices loaf of bread stable, rice prices up

Bread is one of our basic food products. The Dutch spend nearly 4 times as much on bread as on potatoes, rice and pasta together. In the course of 2008, the price of a loaf of bread has risen only marginally and subsequently remained stable. The price of rice on the other hand – the basic source of food for more than half of the world’s population – has risen considerably. In the period January 2008–September 2009, rice prices soared by 22 percent. Pasta prices rose by nearly 12 percent. Potato prices dropped by 9 percent. The general price increase for Dutch consumers over the period January 2008–September 2009 was 3.4 percent.
