Private accident most common cause of non-natural death

Last year, 5.4 thousand persons in the Netherlands died a non-natural death. Non-natural death includes fatal accidents, suicide, murder and manslaughter. Most victims died in accidents.

With 2.6 thousand, private accidents claimed most victims. Within the category private accidents, falls occurred most frequently: more than four in five deadly victims fell to death. The remainder died from fire, drowning, chocking or took a fatal overdose of drugs, alcohol or medicine.

Most victims of private accidents were found in the age group 80 years and older. A disproportional number of over-80s fell to death.
