Volunteers do unpaid work outside an organised network. Looking after old parents, sick relatives or neighbours is not considered voluntary work, but informal aid. In POLS voluntary work is defined on the basis of a list of organisations where volunteers have been active over the past years. The amount of informal aid is determined on the basis of aid provided to people in some kind of need in the past month.
