Tobacco act

Some important provisions of the Dutch tobacco act are:
- Smoking is not permitted in government buildings and institutions for health care, subsidised sports, welfare and education.
- No tobacco products may be sold in government buildings and institutions for health care, subsidised sports, welfare and education.
- Tobacco products may not be sold to children aged under 16 years.
- Operators of public transport (e.g. trains, buses, taxis) are obliged to ensure that their passengers travel smoke-free.
- All forms of advertising for tobacco products are prohibited, except in shops selling tobacco products. The tobacco industry is forbidden from sponsoring events. Tobacco products may not be given away free of charge (e.g. for promotional purposes).
- Employers are obliged to ensure a smoke-free place of work for their employees.
 
As from 1 July 2008, smoking is legally prohibited in hotels, restaurants, bars, cafés etc. and in all sports, art and cultural institutions and venues.
