Tax incentive scheme

Two important initiatives were taken to promote the use of more fuel-efficient cars:

1. No-claims bonus system with respect to energy labels
Since 1 February 2008, the energy-labelling scheme in the passenger cars and motorcycles tax (BPM) has become more rigid. The bonus for people buying fuel-efficient cars (i.e. label A and B) was raised, while buyers of less fuel-efficient cars (labels D-G) pay more tax.

2. Guzzler tax
On 1 February 2008, the so-called guzzler tax or CO2 surcharge was introduced, i.e. if the CO2 emission exceeds a certain value, a surcharge is imposed.
