Dental implants

Dental implants are artificial roots inserted in the jaw. The implant replaces the natural root and serves as the new basis for a crown, bridge or even for a complete set of dentures.

For the first time, Statistics Netherlands has collected data on dental implants. The data are based on the Health Survey and the Integrated System of Social Surveys (POLS). The Health Survey is an annual sample survey conducted among 9 to 10 thousand persons. People living in homes and institutions are not included in the survey.

Respondents are interviewed in a face-to-face survey. Two years are taken together (2007 and 2008 minus December) resulting in a sample survey among more than 12 thousand people over the age of 20. It needs to be borne in mind that data derived from sample surveys are subject to a margin of error.
