Murder and manslaughter

The figures in this article refer to all murders committed in the Netherlands. The victims are residents (persons entered into the population registers of a Dutch municipality) and non-residents (on average 15 percent).
Data on StatLine about murder and manslaughter victims solely refer to residents.

The most important data sources on murder and manslaughter are:
• data on the death certificate provided by the doctor in attendance or coroner;
• court records in the case of non-natural death.

The distinction between manslaughter (intentional killing) and murder (with malice aforethought) cannot be made, because when the court files are available, the sentence has not (yet) been pronounced in most cases.
