In 2006, more than 0.7 million people were active in tennis clubs, i.e. 14 percent of all sports club members in the Netherlands. Altogether, there were 1,840 tennis clubs. Since 2000, the number of tennis clubs has increased marginally by 40. Membership hardly changed during this period. The average tennis club has twice as many members as sports clubs in general.
Fewer outdoor tennis courts
Although the number of tennis clubs increased marginally and total membership remained unchanged, the number of tennis courts declined. The number of outdoor tennis accommodations declined markedly from 680 in 1994 to 480 in 2006. The total capacity of tennis accommodations comprises 5.5 thousand outdoor tennis courts, nearly 80 percent of all tennis courts. The number of outdoor courts has dropped by 6 percent since 1994.
More than one thousand squash courts
Squash is also a popular racket sport. There were more than 1.1 thousand squash courts in the Netherlands in 2006, mostly in indoor accommodations and in combination with tennis courts.
Squash enjoys great popularity since 1980. The number of squash courts grew from just over 370 in 1988 to 1.4 thousand in 2000, but subsequently dropped back to 1.1 thousand.
