Motor fuel prices doubled in more than twelve years

Motor fuel prices have risen dramatically over the past twelve years. In June 2008, petrol prices were 92 percent up on January 1996. The price of diesel fuel has even more than doubled over the same period. In June 2008, the price of diesel fuel was 124 percent higher than in January 1996. Since June 2007, the price of diesel has soared. In June 2008, the price was 32 percent up on June 2007. The consumer price index (CPI) reflects the average price increase for consumers. The CPI has risen by 32 percent over the past twelve years. Since 2004, the gap between the increase in motor fuel prices and the CPI has widened.
