There are various methods to calculate the share of renewable energy in total energy consumption. This article is based upon the input method as used by the International Energy Agency (IEA) and Eurostat. This method varies from the national method (i.e. the substitution method), as laid down in the Protocol Monitoring Renewable Energy (SenterNovem, 2006). For the new European target (20 percent of renewable energy in 2020) a third calculation method is considered: the final energy method.
