Learning tracks in senior secondary vocational education (mbo)

There are two learning tracks in senior secondary vocational education:

  • beroepsopleidende leerweg (bol);
  • beroepsbegeleidende leerweg (bbl).

In the bol learning track, students go to school and spend a total of 20 to 60 percent of the course in work placements. The bbl is apprenticeship-based, with the apprenticeship accounting for more than 60 percent of the total course.

Most bbl students are employed by a company and go to school for one or two days a week, or for one week per month for the theoretical part. The bbl learning track is only open to students who are no longer subject to compulsory full-time education.
