Car density

Car density is defined as the number of cars per km2 on 1 January.
The data are based on information from the Dutch Road Transport Directorate (RDW), a public organisation engaged in the registration of driving licences and number plates issued in the Netherlands. The RDW counts all motor vehicles and keeps the motor vehicle registration as up-to-date as possible. Cars are divided by neighbourhood on the basis of data provided by the RDW.

The number of registered motor vehicles includes vehicles owned by lease companies. Such vehicles are registered at the address of the lease company. In neighbourhoods where lease companies are located, the amount of cars per area is distorted.

The number of cars is given for each area where at least 50 households live and the number of cars per household does not exceed 2.5. In this article 8,904 neighbourhoods meet both requirements.
