This table provides data on contacts of the Dutch population with providers of medical care, including data on hospitalisation and the use of medicines. It covers the following aspects:

- contacts with GP
- contacts with medical specialists
- contacts with dentist
- contacts with physiotherapist/remedial therapist
- contacts with alternative healers
- hospitalisations, with and without overnight stay
- use of medicines, prescribed and non-prescribed
- satisfaction with GP, specialist, dentist, physiotherapist, hospital

The data are based on the Health Interview Survey conducted by Statistics Netherlands. They can be broken down by a number of personal characteristics. The Health Interview Survey is a continuous survey. Its population consists of Dutch residents of all ages in private households.

Contact with GP
Contacts with the GP include:
- consultations at the GP's practice
- visits by the GP to the patient's home
- consultations by telephone
- or other contacts
Contacts with a locum GP or with the night/weekend surgery are also included. Contacts with the GP's medical assistant and nurse are not included.
Contact in the last 12 months
Contacts in the 12 months preceding the interview.
% persons with at least 1 contact
Percentage of persons in the population who contacted their GP at least once in the 12 months preceding the interview.
Contact with medical specialist
Contact with medical specialists in the Netherlands, in:
- out-patient department
- hospital department
- emergency department
- practice outside the hospital
- private clinic
Contacts during hospital or day admissions are not included. Contacts with psychiatrists are also not included.
Contact in the last 12 months
Contacts in the 12 months preceding the interview.

Percentage of persons in the population who contacted a medical specialist at least once in the 12 months preceding the interview.
Contact with dentist
Visits to a dentist in the Netherlands. Contacts with a dental hygienist, orthodontist and oral/dental surgeon are not included.

Admissions related to childbirth and admissions to psychiatric hospitals are excluded. As a result, figures presented here may deviate from figures based on registered hospital admissions. In addition, the health interview survey does not cover people in institutional households, which may also result in discrepancies with register-based figures.
