Feels occasionally insecure
Question: Do you occasionally feel insecure? Included in the basic
questionnaire of the Integrated System of Social Surveys. Possible
answers: yes (subsequent question: often, occasionally, rarely?); no.
Percentage of affirmative answers is indicated.
Scared to be at home alone
Question: Are you occasionally scared when being at home alone in the
evening? Possible answers: nearly always; usually; sometimes; sometimes
not; usually not (these answers are included in the category 'feeling
insecure'; never; not applicable, never at home alone (this answer is not
taken into account.
Scared to open the front door
Question: Suppose you are at home alone and suddenly the doorbell rings
at 10 p.m. How would you react? Possible answers: open the door; only if
it is not a stranger; only open the door if the person seems trustworthy;
do not open the door; other answers (the last four are included in the
category 'feeling insecure'.
Scary places in the neighbourhood
Question: Are there any places or streets in your neighbourhood you would
rather avoid in the evening when alone? In 1997 and 1998, this question
was incorporated in the basic questionnaire of the Integrated System of
Social Surveys in a different context (dwelling and dwelling conditions).
From 1999, this question has been asked in the REP module to respondents
aged 12 and older. An affirmative answer is included in the category
'feeling insecure'.
Changed outdoor leisure activities
Question: Did you change your behaviour with respect to going out in
recent years because you think it is unsafe?
Possible answers: go out less frequently because I think it is unsafe;
avoid certain places; never go out alone in the evening; never go out
in the evening at all. If the respondent gives one or more of the above
answers, he/she is assumed to feel insecure.
Chance to have one's home broken into
Question: How big do you think the chance is of having your house broken
into in the twelve months to come? Possible answers: "big", not big",
"not small", "small". The first answer is included in the category
'feeling insecure'.
From 2002, this question has been asked to respondents
aged 16 and older, from 2003 to respondents aged 15 and older .
