Rural areas

Rural areas include municipalities with a relatively low level of human activities (living, working, going to school, shopping, going out, recreation, etc.). These activities are expressed in the number of addresses per km² (OAD). The OAD is defined as the average number of addresses per km² within a circle with a radius of one kilometre of every address. The OAD of a municipality is calculated by taking the average of all addresses in that particular municipality. On the basis of the OAD, a degree of urbanisation is attributed to every municipality. In this article, the following categories of urbanisation are distinguished:
• Urban municipalities: one thousand or more addresses per square kilometre
• Rural municipalities: fewer than one thousand addresses per square kilometre
