Kyoto protocol

Under the Kyoto protocol the Netherlands has to reduce its greenhouse emissions by an average of 6 percent a year relative to 1990 in the period 2008-2012. The emissions in the base year 1990 totalled 213 billion kg CO2-equivalents. Strictly speaking the emissions in the base year are the sum of the CO2-equivalents of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide (N2O) methane (CH4) in 1990, and of fluorine gasses in 1995.
Part of the reduction may be realised abroad with the use of Dutch capital. For example: the Netherlands can but emission rights in other countries or finance projects that will result in reducing emissions abroad.
