Turnover up again in hotels and restaurants

Turnover in the hotel and restaurant sector was again higher in the fourth quarter of 2005 than in the same period twelve months previously.

After corrections for price rises, the volume of turnover rose by 2.4 percent. This is the third quarter in a row that turnover volume in this sector rose. For the whole of 2005, it was 1 percent higher than in 2004. According to figures form Statistics Netherlands, the hotel and restaurant sector seems to be recovering after year-on-year turnover decreases in the years following 2001.

Restaurants show most recovery

Turnover increased in all branches of the hotel and restaurant sector compared with the same period twelve months previously. Restaurants benefited most, however, with an increase of nearly 6 percent. After correction for price increases, the volume of turnover was 4 percent higher. Hotels, too, including boarding houses and conference venues, booked higher turnover, namely 4.3 percent.

Pubs sell less, cafeterias sell more

Although turnover in pubs and bars rose, the volume of turnover decreased. It was 0.3 percent smaller in the fourth quarter of 2005 than in the same period in 2004. For cafeterias turnover rose by 4.4 percent and the volume of turnover rose by 2.7 percent.

More sold in the whole of 2005

Across the whole of the year, the volume of turnover was 1 percent higher in 2005 than in 2004. The hotel and restaurant sector is apparently picking up again. Takings were up in restaurants in particular. Only cafeterias sold less, their volume of turnover fell by 0.5 percent.
