Turnover in hotels and restaurants up again

The hotel and restaurant sector booked 1.3 percent more turnover in the second quarter of 2005 than in the same period last year. As prices in the sector rose by 1.6 percent in the same period, the volume of turnover was 0.3 percent lower.

This is now the third quarter in succession that turnover in the hotel and restaurant sector has increased, according to provisional figures from Statistics Netherlands.

Largest increase for pubs and hotels

In June, with its high temperatures, the turnover increase was largest for pubs at 6.0 percent. This pushed up turnover for these establishments to a level 2.1 percent higher than in the second quarter of 2004. As prices rose more slowly than turnover, the volume of turnover in pubs rose slightly (+0.2 percent) for the first time since 2001.

Hotels, including boarding houses and conference centres, realised 2.3 percent more turnover in the second quarter of 2005 than in the same period last year.

Turnover slightly up in restaurants

Restaurants realised a turnover increase of 1.1 percent in the second quarter of 2005, which is about equal to the increase for the whole sector. Prices rose by 1.9 percent in the same period. If this is taken into account the volume of turnover for restaurants was 0.8 percent lower.

Cafes book less turnover

Unlike the other branches in the sector, cafes (including lunch rooms, snack bars and fast-food outlets) booked 0.7 percent less turnover than in the second quarter of last year. This branch was also the only branch to realise lower turnover than twelve months earlier in the previous two quarters. As prices in these establishments rose by an average 1.8 percent, the volume of turnover dropped by 2.5 percent.
