In December, turnover in the non-food sector was up by 21.5 percent year on year. The volume of sales (adjusted for price changes) grew by 11.1 percent compared to the same month one year previously. On 19 December 2021, another strict lockdown was imposed to prevent coronavirus infections. Many non-food shops then had to close their doors.
\nShops selling footwear and leather products, clothes shops, shops selling recreational goods, shops selling furniture and home furnishings, shops selling consumer electronics and white goods and those selling DIY products, kitchens and flooring saw year-on-year turnover growth in December. However, shops selling personal care products had lower turnover than twelve months previously.
\nShops selling food, beverages and tobacco achieved 5.7 percent higher turnover in December 2022 than in the same month of 2021. The volume of sales, however, was 7.8 percent lower. Turnover at supermarkets and at specialist shops was up by 6.6 and 1.2 percent, respectively.

In December, online turnover was down by 11.1 percent year on year. Web shops recorded a turnover decrease of 7.7 percent; their core activity is selling goods and services over the internet. Multi-channel retailers (retailers selling goods and services over the internet as a side activity) achieved 15.2 percent lower turnover in online sales.
\nOnline turnover of shops selling food and personal care products was higher in December 2022 compared to December 2021. Online turnover of shops selling other products was lower.

In 2022, adjusted for shopping days, retail sales increased by 6.7 percent relative to 2021. This is the highest growth since the series of adjusted figures started in 2005. However, the volume of sales was 0.6 percent lower. Turnover of non-food shops grew by 12.2 percent, while food shops realised a growth of 4.2 percent. Online turnover was 7.6 percent lower than in 2021.
\nThe substantial growth in 2022 is partly related to the coronavirus measures in 2021. From January to the end of April and from 19 December to mid-January 2022, a hard lockdown applied in the Netherlands, which mainly affected non-food shops. In addition, inflation reached a record high in 2022 at an average of 10.0 percent.

In addition to the CPI inflation rate, CBS also publishes special aggregate indices as part of its flash estimate. Aggregates are groups in which different product categories are put together by theme. Four special aggregates together constitute total CPI expenditure. These include: non-energy industrial goods; energy including motor fuels; food, beverages and tobacco; and services.

As of 1996, CBS publishes two different inflation rates: one based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and one based on the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP). According to the HICP flash estimate, inflation stood at 8.4 percent in January. This was 11.0 percent in December.
\nIn order to facilitate comparison of inflation rates, the member states of the European Union (EU) also compile a consumer price index according to internationally agreed definitions and methods. Eurostat calculates the inflation rates for the euro area and the European Union based on these harmonised indices from all EU countries. The European Central Bank (ECB) uses the HICP to formulate its monetary policies in the euro area. In addition, most countries produce their own national consumer price index.
\nFor the Netherlands, the main difference between the CPI and the HICP is that, unlike the CPI, the HICP does not take into account the costs related to home ownership. In the CPI, these costs are calculated on the basis of rental property prices. However, this is not the only difference. This is further explained in a publication.

According to the definitive crop estimates, in 2022 the gross yield of seed onions stood at 1.2 million tonnes, a 17.2-contraction on the previous year and the lowest yield since 2018. Altogether 1 million tonnes of yellow and 0.2 million tonnes of red onions were harvested. In addition, 268 thousand tonnes of plant onions were harvested.

\nIn 2022, the gross ware potato yield stood at 3.6 million tonnes, representing an increase of 8.8 percent on the previous year. 7.3 million tonnes of sugar beet were harvested, an increase of almost 11 percent.\n
\nRelative to 2021, the wheat cultivation area increased by 4.2 percent to 124 thousand ha. The barley cultivation area also increased, by 22.6 percent to 36.9 thousand ha. The growth in cultivation area was mainly related to the sowing of summer wheat and summer barley. After an increase over the previous year, the seed onion cultivation area declined by 9 percent to 27.4 thousand ha.

\nThe ware potato area grew again in 2022: by 7.3 percent to 76.6 thousand ha. This came after a decline over the two previous consecutive years. The sugar beet area rose slightly, by 1.3 percent.

\nThe yields per hectare of wheat and barley rose substantially year on year in 2022. The wheat yield amounted to 9.6 tonnes per hectare (+17.3 percent). Of barley, 7.9 tonnes were harvested from one hectare last year; 17.1 percent more than a year earlier.

\nThe yields per hectare of seed onions declined by 9.3 percent to 44.5 tonnes per ha. This is the lowest yield since 2018. The yield per hectare of sugar beet stood at 88.8 tonnes on average. This is 9.4 percent more than in the previous year. At 47.1 tonnes, the hectare yield of ware potatoes was up slightly on 2021.

\nEvery year in October, CBS publishes provisional crop estimates (including gross yield and hectare yield), based on expert estimates of the expected crop yield per hectare. The total gross crop yield may ultimately be higher or lower. Due to weather conditions for instance, it is possible that part of the cultivated area is not harvested or that the final yields per hectare are higher or lower.
\nThe definitive crop estimates (including gross yield and hectare yield) over the same year are subsequently published in January of the following year and based on a survey among nearly 5 thousand crop farmers. Based on the survey, the definitive yield per hectare is determined as well as the crop yield ratio, i.e. the actual over the potential harvest yield.
\n
\nA separate StatLine table is published to indicate the discrepancies between the definitive and provisional crop estimates, alongside the StatLine table on crop production by region.
On St Eustatius, prices were up by 8.0 percent year on year in Q1 2023. In Q4 2022, the inflation rate stood at 9.1 percent. The subsidy on the fixed usage tariff for electricity had a dampening effect on inflation here as well.
\nThe inflation on Saba amounted to 7.0 percent in Q1 2023. This was still 9.7 percent in Q4 2022. The downward effect was mainly caused by a drop in the variable usage tariff for electricity. In addition, petrol became cheaper.
\nInflation is the year-on-year change in the consumer price index; it was lower on all three islands in the first quarter. The decline was strongest on Bonaire: from 8.1 percent in Q4 to 4.5 percent in Q1. On St Eustatius and Saba, the decrease was less substantial.
\nThis does not mean that prices in the first quarter of 2023 also fell compared to the fourth quarter of 2022. Prices on Bonaire rose by 0.9 percent and on St Eustatius by 0.4 percent. Only Saba recorded a very slight price decrease: -0.1 percent in Q1 2023 relative to Q4 2022.

Relative to Q4 2022, prices on Bonaire rose by 0.9 percent in Q1 2023. This increase was mainly due to higher prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages. Eggs stood out with a price increase of 26.5 percent compared to the previous quarter. Airline tickets also increased in price by 9.2 percent quarter on quarter. Furthermore, the waste collection charge rose as of 1 January 2023.
\nElectricity was cheaper in Q1 due to the aforementioned subsidy on the fixed usage tariff. Furthermore, petrol and diesel decreased in price compared to the previous quarter, by 8.5 and 11.6 percent respectively.
\nOn St Eustatius, consumer prices rose by 0.4 percent in Q1 2023 relative to Q4 2022. Prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages were up quarter on quarter, with the price of bread increasing by 9.6 percent. Toiletries were 4.6 percent and other personal care products 8.4 percent more expensive than in the previous quarter.
\nElectricity was cheaper due to the subsidy that took effect on 1 January on the island. As a result, the electricity price fell by 7.7 percent relative to the fourth quarter.
\nSaba recorded a slight price decrease in Q1 compared to the previous quarter. Petrol was 9.4 percent cheaper in the first quarter and the price of diesel fell by 8.0 percent.
\nPrices of food and non-alcoholic beverages and those of clothing and footwear rose by 1.9 percent quarter on quarter.

Consumers are just as pessimistic about the economy in April as they were in March. This component indicator remains at -48. Consumers’ opinions about both the economy in the next twelve months and the economy over the past twelve months have not or have hardly changed.
\nConsumers’ willingness to buy stands at -30 in April, up from -33 in March. Consumers are less negative about both their financial situation in the next twelve months and their financial situation over the past twelve months. Consumers are also less negative about making large purchases in April than they were in March.

Retail turnover data have been adjusted for the shopping-day pattern in April. Retail sales tend to vary from one day to the next. If the shopping-day pattern is not taken into account, retail turnover in April 2023 was 2.7 percent higher than in the same month last year.

In April, turnover in the non-food sector grew by 2.0 percent year on year. The volume of sales (turnover adjusted for price changes) decreased by 6.1 percent compared to the same month last year.
\nShops selling personal care products, shops selling furniture and home furnishings and those selling recreational goods saw year-on-year turnover growth in April. On the other hand, shops selling consumer electronics and white goods, clothes shops, shops selling footwear and leather products and those selling DIY products, including kitchens and flooring, recorded a decrease in April.
\nShops selling food, beverages and tobacco achieved 8.1 percent higher turnover in April than in the same month last year. The volume of sales, however, was 4.3 percent lower. Turnover at supermarkets and specialist shops was up by 8.9 and 2.8 percent, respectively.

In April, online turnover was up by 3.2 percent year on year. Web shops recorded a turnover increase of 4.8 percent; their core activity is selling goods and services over the internet. Multi-channel retailers (retailers selling goods and services over the internet as a side activity) achieved 1.3 percent higher turnover in online sales.
\nOnline turnover of food and personal care products and other non-food products was higher in April 2023 compared to April 2022. Online turnover of consumer electronics and clothing and fashion items was lower.

Output prices are strongly affected by crude oil price developments. In April 2023, a barrel of North Sea Brent oil cost over 76 euros, 22 percent less than one year previously. In March, the average price of a barrel stood at nearly 74 euros, i.e. 27 percent less than in the same month last year.
\nPrices of petroleum derivatives were down by 21.3 percent year on year in April; they were up by 21.2 percent in March. In the chemical industry as well, output prices are generally linked to crude oil price developments. Output prices of chemical products were 13.4 percent lower than in April 2022. In March, they were down by 4.6 percent year on year.
\nIn April, prices were up in most manufacturing industries.

The share of the population aged 15 to 74 years in paid work (net labour participation rate) amounted to 72.9 percent last month. This percentage has remained the same since December. The unemployment rate in that month stood at 3.5 percent, just as in March. In January, it rose slightly (to 3.6 percent), but in February and March the rate was back at the level of December.
\nTrends varied for different age groups. In general, unemployment is highest among young people aged 15 to 24 years. This age group saw an increase in recent months: from 7.5 percent in December last year to 8.0 percent in March. Among the over-45s, on the other hand, the unemployment rate declined over the same period: from 2.5 to 2.2 percent. Unemployment among 25 to 44-year-olds increased slightly from 2.8 to 2.9 percent.
\nAt the end of March 2023, UWV provided 158 thousand current WW benefits. This is over 4 thousand more than in the previous month (+2.8 percent). The increase was largest in the sectors retail trade, wholesale trade and other commercial services. In March, more than 20 thousand benefits were terminated, while over 24 thousand new benefits were granted. Relative to one year previously, the number of WW benefits fell by nearly 26 thousand. This represents a decrease of 14.1 percent.
\nThere were 5 thousand more unemployed in March than three months previously (an increase of 2 thousand per month on average). This increase is the result of underlying flows between the employed, unemployed and non-labour force. This is visualised in the diagram below. The chart below the diagram shows how these different flows have developed over the past few months.

The graphics show there are two flows that can reduce unemployment. The first flow is when unemployed people find a job; the second flow is when unemployed people stop seeking work and withdraw from the labour market.
\nThere are also two opposite flows, which can increase unemployment. These occur when people in employment lose their jobs and when people who did not enter the labour market before start seeking work. If they do not find work immediately, they become part of the unemployed labour force.
\nIn March, the inflow of unemployed from outside the labour force amounted to 40 thousand, on balance. This is somewhat higher than in the final months of 2022 and early 2023. As a result, unemployment has increased in recent months.
\nThe increase in unemployment is dampened by the fact that the number of people in work who became unemployed was smaller than the number of unemployed who found a job. In March, this balance stood at 34 thousand, which was lower than in the previous month.
\nEvery month, CBS publishes figures on the labour force in accordance with guidelines of the International Labour Organization (ILO). The corresponding indicators, i.e. the employed and unemployed labour force, are used around the world to describe cyclical developments on the labour market. Monthly figures are essential in this respect. In addition, UWV issues its own monthly figures on unemployment benefits. Figures released by UWV do not correspond one-to-one with the labour force indicators.

Households spent 0.8 percent more in March 2023 year on year, adjusted for price changes and shopping-day pattern. They spent more on services, but less on goods.
\nIn March 2023, the total volume (working-day adjusted) of goods exports was up by 2.4 percent year on year. The increase was mainly seen in exports of petroleum products, machinery and appliances, and transport equipment.
\nThe volume of investments in tangible fixed assets was up by 4.4 percent year on year. This is mainly due to more investments in buildings and passenger cars.
\nIn March 2023, the average daily output of the Dutch manufacturing industry was 4.0 percent lower than in March 2022. Output also contracted year on year in the first two months of 2023.
\nThe number of corporate bankruptcies, adjusted for court session days, has increased. There were 26 more bankruptcies in April than in the previous month. This is an increase of 12 percent. The number of bankruptcies remained below the pre-pandemic level.
\nIn April, owner-occupied dwellings (excluding new constructions) were on average 4.4 percent cheaper than in April 2022. In the previous month, the year-on-year decline was 2.3 percent.
\nIn Q1 2023, the number of hours worked, adjusted for seasonal effects, was 0.4 percent lower than in Q4 2022. Total hours worked by employees and self-employed people over Q1 2023 amounted to over 3.6 billion.
\nAt the end of March, there were 437 thousand unfilled vacancies, just as many as at the end of December 2022. This stabilisation follows two quarters of decline.
\n
\nIn April 2023, 343 thousand people aged 15 to 74 years were unemployed. The unemployment rate in that month stood at 3.4 percent. From February through April, unemployment increased by an average of 6 thousand per month.
\n
\nIn Q4 2022, turnover at temporary employment and job placement agencies rose by 1.8 percent relative to the previous quarter.
According to the first quarterly estimate, in Q1 2023 gross domestic product (GDP) decreased by 0.7 percent relative to the previous quarter. In Q4 2022, GDP rose by 0.4 percent. The contraction in the first quarter of 2023 is mainly due to a decline in the trade balance and to increased gas withdrawals from storage facilities.

Luxembourg has the highest per capita GDP in the EU. This is due to the fact that the country has relatively many financial institutions and a large number of people who work but do not live there. In second place is Ireland, followed by Denmark and the Netherlands. At 12 thousand euros, Bulgaria’s GDP per capita is the lowest within the EU. This is over two and a half times lower than the EU average.

In 2022, Dutch GDP per capita was 3.5 percent higher than in the previous year. In 2021, growth was still 4.3 percent. This means that per capita GDP in the Netherlands has seen strong growth for two years in a row. In 2022, it was back above the level of 2019, the last pre-pandemic year.
\nLast year, the Netherlands’ GDP per capita grew faster than the average across the EU. In addition, growth was stronger than for our main EU trading partners: Germany, Belgium and France. In both Belgium and France, per capita GDP rose by 2.2 percent. Germany’s GDP per capita increased by 1.1 percent.

In 2022, Luxembourg’s GDP per capita was over nine and a half times higher than Bulgaria’s GDP per capita. However, a person is able to buy more goods and services in Bulgaria than in Luxembourg with the same amount of money. To make economic prosperity levels in countries comparable, Eurostat adjusts for price level differences and therefore also for differences in purchasing power. A country’s purchasing power is influenced by the level and development of prices and wages.
\nAfter adjustment for price level differences between EU countries, Dutch GDP per capita stood at over 45 thousand euros in 2022. With this correction, the Netherlands still ranks fourth within the EU. The correction narrows the gap between EU countries. Per capita GDP in Luxembourg was over four times higher than in Bulgaria, after correction for price level differences.

Manufacturers were mainly less positive about order positions. They were also less positive about future output in the next three months. Their opinion about current stocks of finished products was more negative.

\nTwo component indicators of producer confidence were positive. The majority of manufacturers consider their order position to be strong rather than weak, given the time of year. Furthermore, manufacturers anticipating output to increase over the next three months outnumber those expecting a decrease.
\n
\nHowever, there was one negative component indicator: more manufacturers define their current stock of finished products as too large rather than too small.
In most major manufacturing industries, producer confidence deteriorated in May. Just as in the preceding months, confidence was highest in the electrotechnical and machinery industries. Confidence was lowest in the timber and building materials industry.

In March 2023, the average daily output of the Dutch manufacturing industry was 4.0 percent lower than in March 2022. Output also contracted year on year in the two preceding months of 2023.
\nGermany is an important market for the Dutch manufacturing industry. In May, German entrepreneurs were more negative about the business climate, according to the Business Climate Index of the IFO Institute. They were considerably more negative about their future business situation and also less positive about their current situation. The average daily output generated by the German manufacturing industry was up by 3.6 percent year on year in March, as reported by Destatis.

In 2022, solar energy consumption (for electricity and heat) went up by 45 percent to 62 PJ year on year. This was mainly due to the installation of new solar panels. Total installed solar capacity increased by 28 percent year on year, to over 19 thousand MW (megawatts).
\nIn addition, 2022 was a particularly sunny year. Of the installed solar panels, 20 percent are in solar parks while 80 percent are on roofs or are solar car parking shades.
\nYear on year, wind energy consumption grew by 13 percent to 78 PJ in 2022. Consumption from off-shore wind power was around 30 PJ, roughly the same as in 2021. In the same period, onshore wind energy consumption rose by 25 percent to 47 PJ.
\n
\nTotal wind turbine capacity amounted to nearly 9 thousand megawatts (MW) at the end of 2022, 14 percent more than in the previous year. This increase is largely attributable to new onshore wind farms, adding 950 MW. Offshore capacity rose by 110 MW.

Gross final consumption of biomass showed a decrease of 15 percent in 2022. This was partly due to the fact that one quarter less biomass was co-fired at power stations.
\n
\nIn addition, since mid-2021, stricter sustainability criteria have applied to certain plants for solid and gaseous biomass. If these are not complied with, the biomass used does not count towards gross final energy consumption according to the European calculation method. Despite the decline, the largest contribution to renewable energy continues to come from biomass (40 percent).
\n
\nConsumption of biofuels fell by 4 percent in 2022. Biopetrol consumption rose by 7 percent, while biodiesel consumption declined by 12 percent. The supply of biodiesel to international shipping did show a substantial increase.

The contribution of heat pumps to the total amount of renewable energy is still relatively small at 7 percent but is rising. The total amount of heat extracted in 2022 was up by over a quarter, exceeding 20 PJ.

\nHeat pumps play an increasing role in heating buildings. A heat pump extracts energy (heat) from the outside air or soil (up to 500 meters deep).
\n
\nFigures on the number of hybrid heat pumps are also available for the first time in 2022. A hybrid heat pump is a heat pump that works in conjunction with a boiler for central heating. Roughly a quarter of the ouitdoor air-to-water heat pumps installed in 2022 are hybrid.

Bonaire had 24,090 inhabitants on 1 January 2023, representing a year-on-year increase of 1,517 persons (7 percent). This was mainly due to the fact that many more people settled on the island than departed (1,413), and to a limited extent because of natural population growth (73, births minus deaths). The number of people on Bonaire who were born outside the Caribbean Netherlands rose by more than 1,400. This was mainly due to more residents born in the European Netherlands, on Curaçao, in the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Colombia and the United States.
\nOn 1 January 2023, St Eustatius had 3,293 inhabitants. This is a year-on-year increase of 51 persons (2 percent), primarily due to more people settling on the island than leaving. Natural population growth was limited. The number of people on St Eustatius born outside the Caribbean Netherlands rose by more than 65. An increase was mainly seen in residents born in Central and South America.

The population of Saba stood at 2,035 on 1 January 2023. This is 124 (6 percent) more than one year previously. More people settled on the island than departed (114). Natural population growth was limited. The number of people residing on Saba who were born outside the Caribbean Netherlands rose by 139. These were mainly persons born in Canada and the United States. At the start of 2023, Saba also had more inhabitants who were born in Asia, compared to one year previously.

An inflation rate of 6.1 percent in May 2023 means that prices of consumer products were on average 6.1 percent higher than in May 2022. The 6.1-percent inflation is therefore not on top of the 5.2-percent inflation of April.

As from the reporting month of June 2023, in which the flash estimate will be published on 30 June, CBS will employ a new method to measure energy prices in the CPI. Under the current method, the price development of energy is measured on the basis of new energy contracts. The new method uses transaction data provided by energy suppliers, so that the tariffs paid under long-standing energy contracts can also be taken into account. This will result in a more accurate inflation rate. On 2 March, CBS published an update on its research into the new method of measuring energy prices.
\nAs of 1996, CBS publishes two different inflation rates. One based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and one on the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP). According to the HICP flash estimate, inflation stood at 6.8 percent in May. This was 5.8 percent in April.
\nIn order to facilitate comparison between countries, EU member states calculate a consumer price index according to internationally agreed definitions and methods. Eurostat calculates the inflation rates for the euro area and the European Union based on these harmonised indices (HICP) from all EU countries. The European Central Bank (ECB) uses the HICP to formulate its monetary policies in the euro area. In addition, most countries produce their own national consumer price index.
\nFor the Netherlands, the main difference between the CPI and the HICP is that, unlike the CPI, the HICP does not take into account the costs related to home ownership. In the CPI, these costs are calculated on the basis of rental property prices. However, this is not the only difference. This is further explained in a publication.

Every month, CBS publishes updates on the investment climate in the CBS Investment Radar. Relevant circumstances for the investment climate include, for example, the situation on the sales markets and the financial markets. Although the radar indicators show a strong correlation with the investments in fixed assets, improved circumstances do not necessarily translate into an increased growth rate or less investment decline.
\nAccording to the CBS Investment Radar, the investment climate in the Netherlands in April is less unfavourable than in February. This is mainly because consumer confidence was less negative and the year-on-year growth in share prices was more substantial. In addition, the year-on-year growth in goods exports was higher.

\nThese figures were taken from the 2021 End of Life survey, conducted jointly by CBS, Amsterdam UMC and Erasmus MC and commissioned by ZonMw. Medical practitioners involved in a sample of deaths that occurred in 2021 completed a questionnaire on medical end-of-life decisions. This study has been conducted every five years since 1990. Due to the pressure on care during the coronavirus pandemic, the survey was not conducted in 2020, but one year later.

Approximately half of all deaths in 2021 had cancer or cardiovascular disease as the cause of death. End-of-life decisions are more common among cancer patients compared to other diseases. Thirty-nine percent of dying cancer patients were given more pain relief; in 13 percent of the patients, the physician prescribed, dispensed or administered a drug that hastened death. Over 95 percent of the latter cases involved euthanasia; the remainder were cases of assisted suicide and life-terminating acts without an explicit request.
\n
\nAmong patients who died of cardiovascular disease, most (61 percent) had no medical decision around death. In those cases where the death did involve such a decision, either more pain relief was given, or treatment was waived or stopped. Slightly under 2 percent of these patients were given a drug, predominantly involving euthanasia.
\n
\nIn cases of death due to COVID-19, physicians almost exclusively used pain management or decided to forgo or stop treatment. The survey did not show any cases of euthanasia among these deaths.
More than half (54 percent) of the deaths in 2021 were people aged 80 or older. A third were between 65 and 79 years old, while 1 percent were under 18. In the youngest group, either no new treatment was started or treatment was stopped in 40 percent of patients. Prescribing, dispensing or administering a drug was not common in the very youngest group, nor in the oldest group (over 80).

A medical end-of-life decision is made by the patient's attending physician, generally after discussion with colleagues and in consultation with the patient and the relatives. Fifty-three percent of all deaths in 2021 involved such a decision. The patient's treating physician was the family doctor (GP) in 24 percent of these cases. For 16 percent, it was a specialist in geriatrics; for 13 percent, an attending medical specialist in another discipline.
\n
\nIn cases where the attending physician made a medical decision - usually for patients dying at home - this was usually pain and symptom management (30 percent). The same was true for specialists in geriatrics (38 percent). Among medical specialists in another discipline, the medical decision was most often to forgo or stop treatment (32 percent).

Last year, the number of road traffic fatalities was nearly 27 percent higher than in 2021. Just as in previous years, there were more male (522) than female victims (215).

In 2022, traffic accidents killed 291 cyclists. This is 84 more than in the previous year and the highest number of cycling deaths since 1996 (when registration started). In addition, 225 passenger car occupants were killed, i.e. 50 more than in 2021.

Traffic mortality rose most sharply among people aged 75 and over, by 59 percent relative to 2021. This is mainly due to more road fatalities among cyclists in this age group: 150 in 2022, up from 94 in the previous year. Traffic victims aged 50 years and over are relatively likely to be involved in a bicycle accident, while younger victims (under 50) are more likely to be killed in a car accident. In relative terms as well, the number of senior cyclists involved in a fatal road accident increased.

Of all cycling fatalities in 2022, almost half were caused by a collision with a van or passenger car. This concerned 141 cycling victims, 60 more than in 2021. There were also more cyclists who were killed in a crash with a lorry, bus or another vehicle. One quarter of all bicycle deaths were not due to a collision. These cyclists died after a fall, due to becoming unwell, wrong steering, bad road surface, slipperiness, or a foot between the spokes, among other things. Over two thirds of these victims were 70 years of age or older.

Noord-Brabant recorded 140 road fatalities, i.e. the highest number of all provinces and 49 more than in 2021. There were far fewer casualties in Drenthe, Overijssel and Zeeland, but the traffic death toll doubled compared to 2021. The province of Utrecht saw a decline, while in Flevoland the number was almost equal to 2021. The lowest number of road fatalities was recorded in Flevoland.

The proportion of overweight children and young people has increased. In 2014, 15 percent of 2 to 24-year-olds were overweight. The increase is mainly seen among 18 to 24-year-olds: from 21 percent in 2014 to 25 percent in 2022. The share of obese young people has remained the same since 2014.

Young people of Dutch origin are least likely to be overweight (15 percent). At 24 percent, overweight is most prevalent among young people with origins outside Europe. Boys and girls are more or less equally likely to be overweight.

In addition to the person’s age, the education level of the parents and whether they are too heavy themselves play a role in (severe) overweight among young people. For example, in 2018/2021 obesity was three times more likely to occur among 2 to 11-year-olds with parents who at most have a VMBO qualification than among children whose parents have completed HBO or university education. (Severe) overweight is also more common among children with at least one obese parent.
\nNearly half of young people aged 4 to 24 years comply with the standards for physical activity as set by the Health Council of the Netherlands. Children aged 4 to 11 years are more likely to meet the guidelines than young people aged 12 to 17 years (57 versus 33 percent). Among 18 to 24-year-olds, the share is 51 percent.
\nYoung people who are (severely) overweight are less likely to meet the physical activity guidelines: 44 percent of those who are overweight comply with these standards and 40 percent of those with obesity. Overweight 12 to 17-year-olds are least likely to meet the guidelines (29 percent).

Seasonally adjusted turnover in accommodation services, including hotels and holiday parks, rose by 3.7 percent in Q1 2023 relative to the previous quarter. Hotels had 4.2 percent more turnover than in Q4. Other acc. services such as holiday parks and campsites generated 2.2 percent more turnover. The volume of sales (i.e. turnover adjusted for price changes) in accommodation services increased by 1.2 percent; it was up for hotels, but declined for the other types of accommodation.
\nIn Q1, food and beverage outlets gained 1.9 percent compared to the previous quarter. Fast-food restaurants (including snack bars and cafeterias) recorded the strongest growth: 3.8 percent. Turnover gains amounted to 2.9 percent for canteens and catering and 1.7 percent for restaurants. The cafés were the only sector to record a decrease (-1.4 percent). The volume sales of food and beverage outlets declined by 0.9 percent.

The accommodation and food services sector achieved 37.8 percent more turnover in Q1 than in Q1 2022. The strong growth was due to a hard lockdown in the first quarter of 2022 until 25 January. Even after that, the availability of accommodation and food services was still restricted due to some coronavirus measures.
\nIn Q1, hotels recorded the largest turnover increase acrossthe accommodation and food services sector at more than 68 percent. Holiday park rental companies and campsites recorded a turnover increase of over 5 percent. This was due to price increases, because the volume shrank by 4 percent.

\nThe turnover increase at cafés was almost 43 percent. Restaurants achieved almost 40 percent more turnover year on year. Fast food restaurants recorded a year-on-year turnover increase of 18 percent. Finally, canteens and catering companies had over 48 percent more turnover than one year previously.

Of all industries (excluding energy and finance), accommodation and food services showed the highest increase in entrepreneurial confidence at the beginning of Q2 2023. Entrepreneurs in this sector are much more positive about the expected turnover. In addition, they have less negative expectations about economic developments than at the beginning of the year.

The maximum permitted rent increase depends on the type of rental agreement (regulated or liberalised) and the level of the tenant's income. Low-income households are eligible for a rent reduction in 2023 under certain conditions. \nAlmost 70 percent of all rented properties are owned by housing corporations. As of 1 July 2023, social sector rents among housing corporations rose by 0.1 percent. The increase was 2.6 percent one year previously.
\nSocial housing rents among other landlords, on the other hand, rose more on average compared to one year previously: 3.7 percent in 2023, against 2.8 percent in 2022.
\nPrivate sector rents also went up more on average this year: 4.5 percent, up from 3.8 percent in 2022. Just as social sector dwellings, private sector dwellings may be owned by either housing corporations or other landlords. Whether a rented property belongs to the private sector is determined by the net rental price at the start of the tenancy agreement. If this price exceeds the so-called liberalisation threshold, it is considered to be a private sector dwelling. In case of a lower rent, it is a social sector dwelling. In 2023, the threshold was set at a net rental price of 808.06 euros.

When a rental dwelling has a change of tenant, different rules apply and the rent is usually increased more. On average, rents increased by 10.9 percent when there was a tenancy change, which is more than in 2022 (9.7 percent). Since 2014, rents of dwellings with a change of tenant have not risen as much as in 2023.
\nThose who rent from a social housing landlord can qualify for an income-dependent rent reduction under certain conditions. This reduction has a dampening effect on rent increases. If tenancy changes are not taken into account, rents among social housing landlords were down by 0.1 per cent. Among other landlords, rents of dwellings without tenancy changes rose by 3.2 percent. This increase is higher than in 2022.

Among the four large cities, Amsterdam saw the highest rent increase in 2023, at 2.8 percent. Utrecht recorded the lowest increase: 2.4 percent. Tenancy changes had the smallest effect on rent development here as well, namely 0.6 percent.
\nAt the provincial level, rents rose most sharply on average in the province of Fryslân: by 2.4 percent, when taking into account changes of tenants. Tenancy changes had an effect of 0.5 percent here.
\nIn Overijssel and Noord-Brabant, tenancy changes had the largest effect on rent increases compared to other provinces, namely 0.9 percent.
\nFlevoland showed the lowest rent increase at 1.2 percent. Half of the increase in this province (0.6 percent) was due to a change of tenant.
