14-10-2010 A small number of very big enterprises dominates R&D in the Netherlands. Some of these enterprises have their headquarters in the country, some have moved out, some have always been foreign-based. We have already seen many mergers and take-overs, and we expect to see more.In the last two decades or so, the organisation of R&D within the big enterprises in the manufacturing industry has changed. Instead of large centralized laboratories we now see more smaller decentralized R&D labs. 15-12-2008 The guidelines for the compilation of national accounts (SNA)are currently being revised. According to the new guidelines, R&D (research and development) expenditure is no longer recorded as intermediate consumption but as fixed capital formation. In anticipation of the revision, in the Netherlands we have developed the so-called knowledge module, in which R&D expenditure is recorded as fixed capital formation. This report presents the results of the knowledge modules and contains recommendations for work to be done. The report focuses especially on the measurement problems of R&D and the calculations of the life span of R&D fixed capital.

20-11-2008 The significance of knowledge for the economy is widely acknowledged. In 2000 EU government leaders formulated a joint strategy in Lisbon to make the European Union one of the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-oriented economies of the world within the space of ten years. Such a strategy requires a set of indicators to measure progress towards the goals set. Statistics Netherlands has developed a national accounts module to make the investment in knowledge infrastructure in the Dutch economy more visible. This report examines R&D only. It presents the results of an improved estimation of R&D, give recommendations for work to be done, and discusses a number of measurement problems.
