Passenger traffic and transport

Transport performance

Statistics Netherlands publishes yearly total transport performance figures in billions of passenger kilometres by transport method. Some additional estimates are made for this. The mobility of the Dutch population in the Netherlands during the holidays, for instance, is estimated. There are regional data available about the total transport performance.

Transport methods and motives

Apart from the total transport performance per year Statistics Netherlands also has data on trips, distances and travelling time per person per day and per method of transport. There is information about the distance and travelling time per trip as well.

One interesting aspect is the motive for a trip. What is the share of commuting or shopping trips? There are data by motive available per region. The data on methods of transport and motives are broken down by personal characteristics. The motives and the methods of transport of trips are linked as well.

Commuting

What is known about commuter traffic is the average number of kilometres between the home and the work address. There is also a breakdown of commuter trips by distance classes. Broken down by method of transport.

Traffic participants

There are two sorts of data available on traffic participants. The first is the share of people who make at least one trip a day. The second is the share of people who make at least one trip by public transport a day. The share of participants in traffic is broken down by personal characteristics.

They survey on mobility (OVG) also observes the household ownership of vehicles. This is detailed by a number of household characteristic. There is also information available on a number of personal characteristics of the owners of vehicles and drivers licences.

Disabled transport

There is also information available on trips of people using transport for people with limited mobility (three year averages). These means of transport include: mobility scooters, wheel chairs, Zimmer frames and other adapted transporters.
