Infrastructure and traffic

Infrastructure

Statistics Netherlands publishes data about the infrastructure in the Netherlands. Data are compiled on the length of the infrastructure, government expenditure on roads and waterways and the use of the infrastructure.

  • The length of roads broken down by road management and the number of traffic lanes.
  • The length of railways broken down by parallel tracks and electrification.
  • The length of shipping lanes, broken down by management, class of waterway, navigability, economic importance and recreation class.

These results are based on the registers of the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management.

Sea transport

The number of merchant sea ships that have entered and left Dutch harbours are listed by type of shipping and port on the basis customs documents.

Traffic on inland water ways

Inland shipping data is collected on many bridges and sluices. This includes the number of passengers on the vessel, listed by loading capacity.

Road traffic

Surveys on individuals and businesses provide data on the distances covered by all Dutch motor vehicles. Information about the total traffic performance becomes available by relating this average number of kilometres per vehicle to the total number of vehicles. Examples are the vehicle kilometre which is defined as a kilometre travelled by a vehicle, and the tonne kilometre defined as a tonne of freight travelling one kilometre.

Furthermore, there are  more than eight hundred points outside the built-up area where the number of vehicles passing is counted 24 hours a day. Practically all these points are on national and provincial roads. These figures make it possible to calculate the traffic index. The traffic index indicates the increase or decrease in traffic density.

Air traffic

The data on flights are based on the airport registers, sent each month by the managers of the civilian airports to Statistics Netherlands. Commercial air traffic includes all flights of the airline companies of passengers and cargo.
