Various transport methods are distinguished in goods transport: sea transport, inland shipping, aviation, road transport, transport by rail and transport by pipeline. Transport is further broken down by a number of aspects such as:
-
location (of loading and unloading);
-
type of transporter;
-
type of freight (appearance, including container transport, and kind of goods).
The goods transports are classified on the basis of the NSTR.
Transport by sea
We need reliable and detailed figures to determine the competitive position of the Dutch sea ports compared to the other ports in the world and especially in the Hamburg-Le Havre range. The statistics on sea transport provide information about international commercial shipping, meaning the flow of goods shipped by sea between the Netherlands and other countries.
Transport by inland waterways
The Rhine and Meuse provide a good connection with the European hinterland. Transport with inland shipping is an efficient, safe and environmentally sound way of transport. The statistics on inland shipping provides information about inland and international freight transport per inland vessel by type of freight. Furthermore there is data available on the share of transport by nationality of the ship (under Dutch or foreign flag).
Road transport
The statistics on road transport show the transport performance by Dutch entrepreneurs in domestic and international transport. The data on transport carried out by professional transporters is gathered in cooperation with NIWO. Individual surveys among companies provide data on their own transports.
Rail transport
The statistics on rail transport show that volume of freight transported in domestic and international transports.
Air transport
The statistics on air transport show that volume of freight transported by aircraft into or out of Dutch airports.
Pipeline transport
Statistics Netherlands observes the border crossing transport of oil and oil products through pipelines.
