Municipalities invest less in school accommodation

In 2006, municipal authorities spent nearly 1.2 billion euro on new school buildings and instructional materials. About half was earmarked for primary education. Total investments were still relatively high, though marginally lower than in 2005. In the sector special education, an increasing demand for accommodation caused expenditure to rise by no less than 30 percent.

The level of municipal investments is considerably higher than in the 1990s. This is mainly due to the decentralisation process, which delegated responsibilities from the central government level to the municipal level. Municipal authorities are currently responsible for providing adequate school accommodation.
