Structure and production
The structure of agriculture is described on the basis of the results of the annual agricultural census. With the aid of the results of this census, Statistics Netherlands determines the number of farms growing a particular crop or keeping a particular type of livestock, the size of crop areas and numbers of livestock. In addition to these topics, which are measured annually, the census also regularly focuses on topics such as extensive farming, mechanisation and farm succession. A number of sample surveys are also conducted. Statistics Netherlands not only describes the structure of agriculture in the Netherlands, but also calculates production figures for agriculture, horticulture and the fishing industry. Crop estimates play a key role in arable farming and horticulture. These forecasts estimate the average yield per hectare for each type of crop. With this information plus the total area planted with this crop, Statistics Netherlands can calculate total expected production. Other production data are obtained from abattoirs, dairy factories and fish auctions.
Livestock breeding
The main livestock kept on Dutch farms are cattle, pigs, sheep and goats. Figures are regularly published on livestock housing. The main livestock products in the Netherlands are meat, milk and eggs.
Arable farming
Cereals, potatoes and sugar beet are the main arable crops in the Netherlands. Many dairy farmers also grow green maize for fodder. Many other crops have been grown with varying levels of success over the years. The crop estimates for arable crops provide an insight into arable production over the years.
Horticulture
The horticulture sector produces fruit, vegetables and ornamental plants; grown under glass or outdoors. Statistics Netherlands conducts extra surveys among fruit farms and tree nurseries every five years to obtain sufficiently detailed figures. Crop estimates give information on the production volume of fruit and vegetables.
Fishing
Information is available on the fishing fleet and the volume of fish landed in Dutch ports.
Financial and economic data
Statistics Netherlands also collects information on the economic aspects of agriculture and fishing, including figures on exports of agricultural products, the agricultural labour force, professional gardeners and landscapers, etc.
